In 1989, I saw "Batman" on it’s opening weekend in theaters and I was hooked on film music. I did own "The Dark Crystal" soundtrack on LP years before, but until that point, film music was just a part of movies that did it’s job, but went unnoticed (I was admittedly very young!).

I grew up on a small island in New England and there was very little to do. I fell in love with movies and everything related to them, but there was virtually no information I could find about movie music. (This was even before the Internet!) So I started the fanzine that eventually became Film Score Monthly, and our CD label.

I was impressed by the music of the movie Braveheart and bought the soundtrack. This was the start of my growing interest in film music.

My father has collected film music since the 1950's, so I grew up in an environment where film music was constantly playing. My first film scores (personally) were early Danny Elfman works.

This is an interesting story.  I had always been fond of good film scores but my interest really kicked off when I arrived at University and discovered that one of my new colleagues had a very keen interest in film music.  His name is Tom Daish and he is, of course, webmaster of the fine Soundtrack Express website.  He inspired my interest to new heights and, shortly after he began Soundtrack Express, I began Movie Wave.

It began in the late 70s when I fell in love with Jerry Goldsmith’s score for Star Trek The Motion Picture, still my personal favourite.

Well, I have always been kind of interested in film music. Meaning that I often noticed it and liked it. But it never occured to me that someone actually wrote it, as a peace of art. Might sound stupid, but I suppose I took it for granted, never really thinking about where it came from, or who wrote it. This changed in 1995 when I saw Braveheart and was simply blown away by James Horner's score. I picked up the soundtrack as fast as I could. A couple of days later I got a Williams compilation. And the rest is, as they say, history.
