I will always say this, but I think Danny Elfman is really going to take a point position in the film music world in terms of keeping the “art” of film music alive. He’s had the good fortune of starting his career in a very fertile period for film music, but he also has a love for old film music (and not just Herrmann). Industry respect for him continues to grow, and he continues to land huge, A-list projects. I’d like to see Elliot Goldenthal score more films, but he is comfortable with scoring the rare film and writing his concert music. James Newton Howard is going to be around for a very long time. This guy never seems to run out of ideas. Then there’s Howard Shore, John Powell... We’re in good hands.
Looking at the younger guys, I think Brian Tyler has the momentum to move into another level of films, where he’ll have the opportunity to show his best stuff. You have a movie like "Bubba Ho-Tep" which proves his unflinching ability to adapt to any project. It’s rare that young film composers can tap into a project emotionally, as they are more concerned with overwriting their scores and loading up the orchestrations. They just want to work! But with "Bubba Ho-Tep" you get the feeling that Brian can genuinely feel the sadness in the story, and that is more important than any classical training or technique.

As far as established composers: Elfman, Shore, Thomas Newman. In Japan, Yoko Kanno, who does anime such as "Cowboy Bebop". And my favorite of the "old guard": Williams, Barry, Morricone, Bernstein, Goldsmith, Schifrin, Jarre, although some are slowing down if not stopping altogether. But the real future of film music will depend on musicians who come from another musical world who find an interesting voice for a movie -- which is the way it has always been. Kevin Shields, of the band My Bloody Valentine, for example, who did Lost in Translation along with needle-drops. Wonderful soundtrack.

It is all about the money. Composers with their own studios and production companies will always be around.

It is difficult to see if any of the Media Ventures offspring will achieve long-range success once on their own. Of the independent composers, both John Ottman and Brian Tyler have a sense of refreshing creativity that will keep them in extremely high demand. Both David Arnold and Cliff Eidelman have failed to create the splash that many had anticipated from them.

The sad fact is that Messrs Williams, Barry, Goldsmith, Bernstein, Morricone and co are all over 70 and won't carry on forever - so who will be able to succeed them?  Of course, James Horner, Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer will carry on for many years at the top of the field (in terms of scoring major films).  Of the younger composers, Brian Tyler has shown a lot of potential and should go on to great things.  Marco Beltrami has - since he widely diversified the type of film he scores - really written some impressive stuff lately.  I would imagine that Thomas Newman is likely to be the one composer of the 90s generation who will go down in history alongside the great film composers of the past.

Who knows; the film music world is now driven by fashion and fad. Of those composers who have risen during the last 5 years, I certainly think Marco Beltrami is the one to watch.

Jeff Danna, Marco Beltrami, Brian Tyler. Swedish composer Adam Nordén has written some great music and should have no difficulties making himself a career in Hollywood.
