Question: What is your opinion of the influence that the Mediaventures studios is making in the current film music industry? Is it a step back or a step further?

I think we’ve reached the apex of the influence of MV on film music as a whole. The time when every film seemed to ape the MV style has passed. You will still have Hans Zimmer scoring the occasional action film, but I personally think they bore him, that’s why he dishes off part of the duties to younger composers at the studio. I think Hans is more interested in the prestige pictures, partly because they are good for his career, but also partly because they offer him the opportunity to write better music.

It is a step forward as a business innovation but a step back as a creative matter. There is no question that the Media Ventures scores -- except for the ones at the cream of the crop, that Zimmer oversees himself and puts extra care into -- are homogenous and bland. But the way filmmaking has become, if MV was not around, someone else would write equally lousy scores for these generic pictures.

They make good music, maybe the regular composers were not innovating enough, and Mediaventures cleary filled up a need for a new style and production method of music.

It was a good idea by Zimmer and Rifkin that led to both good and bad consequences. On the positive side, it allowed some promising young composers to get a start in the business. Unfortunately, on the negative side, it allowed talentless hacks to get a start in the business as well. The structure of the business, therefore, dilutes the work of the better composers, and leads to complications of payments and credit that have caused the split and subsequent lawsuit between Zimmer and Rifkin. The concept will likely fade away given the spectacular failure of Media Ventures and the inveitable discovery that the majority of music it produces, while inexpensive for studios, is too repetitious and generic. In short, the style will fade away just like the streetwise jazzy scores of Schifrin in the 1970's.

It's a big step back, in terms of quality music.  Hans Zimmer is a talented and underrated composer, but the majority of his "underlings" seem content to simply emulate his style, not very well.  Having twenty composers score a film cannot be a good thing.  A film score almost always needs to be the vision of the director and the composer - as soon as more composers are involved, creativity is surely stifled.  I have little or no problem with many of Zimmer's scores, but many of the others to have come from the Media Ventures "production line" have been very poor.

Well, I for one like Media Ventures and the typical Media Ventures sound. I think it's a breath of fresh air. It would be sad if every score turned into a MV score, of course, but I don't think that will happen. Diversity is always a good thing.
