Question: Is the film music just a "trend"? or in a few centuries it's gonna be appreciated as much as other classical compositions?

Sadly, I will never see the day when film music is considered a mainstream music genre. I’ve never considered it especially important that film music be revered by the masses or the critics. It’s always meant much more to me on a personal level that it’s relative obscurity has never been a problem. The big point here is that we at least have the small community of people who love film music to share our enthusiasm with. We may love this esoteric slice of music, but most important: we are not alone.

Movies are here to stay and so is movie music. I think film music will be better integrated into the classical repertoire as far as performances, but is best appreciated and understood as a part of filmmaking as an art form. Film music is music where the film -- and not musical structures -- is the underlying form. Happily, both of these phenomena are well on their way.

The fate of film music won't be swayed by trends in the music industry. It will live or die with the movie industry. Original soundtracks are the only form of music not written specifically for enjoyment on its own merits; it is a small part of a larger cinematic project, so when a person mentions the term "movie music", the "movie" part is far more important that the "music" part. Whether or not people 200 years from now will appreciate soundtracks depends on the historical and continuing popularity of the movie industry.

Sadly I don't think it will ever be taken "seriously" like orchestral music is if it's written for anything other than a film.  But then, all of the biggest-selling orchestral albums are film scores, and perhaps that is the only appreciation that is really needed.

It could be argued that film music has already eclipsed concert hall music. In terms of popularity it may be the new classical music, certainly if one looks at album sales. I can’t think of a concert hall composer in the last 30 years who has achieved the popularity of Horner and Williams, and to a lesser extent Zimmer and Shore. In terms of making a living, film and television music is certainly a more attractive proposition than concert hall writing these days. ‘Film music’ and ‘serious’ music are still considered as two separate entities. I’m not sure this view will be eroded through sheer popularity.

I don't see it moving closer to the classical compositions and that genre so I really doubt that it will be sorted under ""Classical"" in the CD stores in the future. I of course think it should be as appreciated as other classical compositions, but I really don't want to compare film music to classical music. It's a totally different genre, or genres. And if it's a trend... I certainly don't hope so! But I think it will continue to evolve and change. Always has and always will, with new composers entering the stage, from many different backgrounds.

Previous question: Who do you think that has been the most important composer in the film music history?
Next question: What is your opinion of the "Troy" affair? Do you think that Yared's reaction was justified? Do you think that his rebellious act is gonna damage him?
